While this design appeared functional initially, it harboured a critical weakness: over time, moisture inevitably penetrated behind the rubber, reaching the unprotected metal insert. Once trapped, this moisture caused the steel insert to corrode from the inside out — a hidden process that went unnoticed until the seal failed entirely.
